Get Your Archive Data Out of Enterprise Vault — Without a Full Migration

Extract Enterprise Vault Archive Data Into Portable Output Formats

The service is designed for enterprise environments where archive data needs to be extracted in a controlled, clearly defined process without including ingestion into another archive, mail or storage platform.

What Is Enterprise Vault Extraction?

Enterprise Vault Extraction is the controlled extraction of archived items from supported Enterprise Vault archives into a defined output format.

Instead of moving archive data directly from Enterprise Vault into another archive or cloud platform, extraction creates the required output from the existing archive environment.

Microsoft Exchange Mailbox Archives

Extract archived items from Enterprise Vault Exchange mailbox archives into the required licensed output format.

This can support organizations that need access to historical mailbox archive data independently of a target migration.

Microsoft Exchange Journal Archives

Extract archived journal items from Enterprise Vault for projects involving historical communications, archive rationalization, compliance requirements or approved downstream processing.

Journal environments should be assessed carefully because their content and associated information can differ significantly from standard user mailbox archives.

Domino Mailbox Archives

Extract archived items from supported Domino mailbox archives where the applicable extraction capability and output format are licensed.

Domino Journal Archives

Extract supported Domino journal archive content as part of a defined Enterprise Vault extraction project.

Enterprise Vault Extraction Is Not Enterprise Vault Migration

Enterprise Vault Extraction and Enterprise Vault Migration solve different requirements.

Enterprise Vault Extraction

  • Extracts archived items from EV

  • Produces EML or another licensed output

  • Does not include target ingestion

  • Can extract mailbox and journal archives within the licensed scope

  • Designed around obtaining archive data

  • Clearly defined extraction boundary

Enterprise Vault Migration

  • Moves archive data to another target

  • Loads data into a destination platform Why Organizations Need Enterprise Vault Extraction

  • Includes source-to-target migration

  • May involve Microsoft 365, another archive or other destination

  • Designed around moving or replacing the archive environment

  • Broader migration project

When Getting the Data Out Matters More Than Where It Goes Next

There are several situations where extracting Enterprise Vault data makes more sense than immediately performing a target migration.

Preparing to Retire Enterprise Vault

An organization may be planning to retire or decommission an existing Enterprise Vault environment but still needs access to selected historical archive data.

Extraction can provide a defined workstream for retrieving the required archive content before the wider retirement process is completed.

Journal Archive Requirements

Journal archives may contain significant volumes of historical communications that organizations need to extract for approved compliance, legal, archive or downstream requirements.

Because journal data can have different characteristics from mailbox archives, it should be identified separately during project assessment.

Archive Data Portability

Historical information may need to exist outside the active Enterprise Vault environment for an approved business, technical or operational requirement.

Extraction creates the archive output without requiring Interlock to ingest that information into another platform as part of the extraction service.

Preparing Data for a Separate Downstream Process

An organization may require archive data in a portable format before another independently scoped system or process uses it.

In this situation, Interlock's responsibility can end at the agreed extraction output rather than extending into target ingestion.

Mailbox Archive Requirements

Organizations may need to extract specific Exchange or Domino mailbox archive content without migrating the entire Enterprise Vault estate.

The extraction scope can be defined around the relevant supported archives and required output.

Reducing Dependency on the Existing Archive

Where the requirement is to obtain archive data independently of the active Enterprise Vault environment, extraction can provide a clearly defined route for retrieving that information

Turn EV Archive Content Into Portable EML Data

EML provides an individual message-based output format that can be useful when an organization requires archive content outside the Enterprise Vault repository.

Interlock's EV Extraction capability can extract archived items into EML or other output formats enabled by the applicable license keys.

Why Extract to EML?

Portable Message Output

EML provides individual message files rather than requiring the extracted content to remain dependent on the Enterprise Vault archive.

Defined Extraction Deliverable

The project can be scoped around producing an agreed output rather than implementing a destination archive.

Downstream Flexibility

Extracted data can be delivered for an approved subsequent process without making that downstream activity part of the EV Extraction engagement.

Frequently Asked Questions

01.

What is Enterprise Vault Extraction?

Enterprise Vault Extraction is the use of the licensed software to extract archived items from supported Enterprise Vault archives into EML or another output format enabled by the applicable license. It does not include target-platform ingestion or Enterprise Vault migration.

02.

Can Enterprise Vault archives be extracted to EML?

Yes. EML is an output format within the defined Enterprise Vault Extraction capability. Other output formats may be available where enabled by the applicable license keys.

04.

Can Exchange mailbox archives be extracted?

Yes. Microsoft Exchange mailbox archives are included within the defined EV Extraction scope.

06.

Can Domino Enterprise Vault archives be extracted?

Yes. The defined service includes Domino mailbox and Domino journal archives, subject to the applicable licensed extraction capability.

08.

Does EV Extraction migrate data to Proofpoint or another archive platform?

No. Target archive ingestion is specifically outside the EV Extraction definition.

10.

Can EV Extraction help when decommissioning Enterprise Vault?

Extraction can form part of a broader decommissioning strategy where an organization needs to retrieve required archive data before retiring Enterprise Vault. The extraction service itself does not constitute full Enterprise Vault decommissioning.

12.

What information is needed to scope an EV Extraction project?

Useful information includes the Enterprise Vault environment, archive types, approximate archive volume, item counts where available, required output format, project deadline and the business reason for extraction.

01.

Is Enterprise Vault Extraction the same as Enterprise Vault Migration?

No. Extraction produces archive data in a supported output format. Migration involves moving the archived data into another target environment.

03.

Which Enterprise Vault archive types are supported?

The defined EV Extraction scope includes Microsoft Exchange mailbox archives, Microsoft Exchange journal archives, Domino mailbox archives and Domino journal archives.

05.

Can Enterprise Vault journal archives be extracted?

Yes. Microsoft Exchange journal archives and supported Domino journal archives fall within the defined extraction scope.

07.

Does EV Extraction migrate data into Microsoft 365?

No. Ingestion into Microsoft 365 is not part of the EV Extraction service. A Microsoft 365 migration would require a separately scoped migration service.

09.

Can EV Extraction move data between Enterprise Vault Vault Stores?

No. Moving archived data between Vault Stores, partitions or storage devices within Enterprise Vault is considered migration activity and is outside the EV Extraction scope.

11.

Can we extract only selected archives?

The required archive population should be established during project assessment. Interlock can scope the extraction around the supported archive types and agreed project requirements.

13.

What happens after the data has been extracted?

Interlock delivers the agreed extraction output. Any subsequent ingestion, migration or processing into another archive, mail or storage platform is outside the EV Extraction scope unless separately contracted.

Before You Retire Enterprise Vault, Make Sure the Data You Need Comes With You.

Whether you need to extract mailbox archives, journal archives or Enterprise Vault data ahead of a broader retirement project, Interlock Technology can help assess the environment and define the appropriate extraction approach.
